How small is this world?
Just got back from lunch with a work colleague originally from Edinburgh who I work with. She is also a BBC and we were discussing how sad it was that chinese people ask each other about "which village in hong kong they are from" and "do they know so and so"...
Anyway, finished lunch and were heading back to the office in the lift when I said "We're probably distant cousins or something anyway"
She replied "yeah, it's like I have relatives in Torquay but I doubt you know them... he's divorced now but he used to have a family down there"
I said "but not many chinese people get divorced, it's a really big thing. One of my aunties got divorced a while back..."
"Yeah this was years ago....." "Did they have kids? How many? 3?"
"y..e..a..h.. 3... two boys and one girl"
"so what was his name?"
"erm.. I only know his chinese name... and even then it's more of a nick name"
"go on.. what was his nick name..."
"Ga Lo"
"Oh my god!! That's my uncle!"
"I guess that's why chinese people ask where each other where they are from! Told you we were cousins!"
